Hesperia Car Accidents Linked to DUIs and Speed
June 26th, 2009 |
The 4th largest city in the Palmdale Metropolitan Area, Hesperia in San Bernardino County, California has nearly 88,000 people. In a high desert city with wide open stretches of highway Hesperia car accident lawyers will tell you that motorists are often tempted to speed, causing tragic accidents that injure and kill. Alcohol has also been a factor in car crashes throughout the city and high desert area.
Statistics from 2001 through 2003 show that Hesperia had 34 fatal car collisions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This computes to a rate of 5.4 fatal Hesperia car crashes per 10,000 people, which is higher than the national average.
In 2006, Hesperia accident statistics compiled by the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) revealed that 13 people were killed and 250 were injured in city car collisions. Hesperia bicycle accidents injured seven. Motorcycle collisions killed one and injured seven. Pedestrian accidents resulted in four fatalities and seven injuries. In 2006, those who drove while intoxicated were responsible for five deaths and 33 crash injuries in Hesparia. Statewide, 1,597 people were killed and 31,099 were injured that year in alcohol-related crashes--compared to 1,574 fatalities and 30,810 injuries in 2005. In 2007, 12 car collisions resulted in 13 fatalities.
Hesperia car collision lawyers have indicated that many of the area's accidents could have been prevented if drunk drivers were taken off the streets.
To reduce the number of car accidents caused by motorists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the Hesperia Police Department was one of 25 law enforcement agencies in San Bernardino County that participated in the AVOID the 25 DUI campaign in 2007. The AVOID the 25 DUI Task Force conducted 14 DUI Sobriety/CDL Checkpoints, 78 DUI Saturation Enforcement Patrols and three underage drinking programs with ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) officers throughout the County. The program arrested nearly 500 suspected drunk drivers in 2007.
The AVOID the 25 DUI Checkpoints and Saturation Enforcement programs help raise the public's awareness of the tragic consequences associated with impaired driving. ABC officers team up with law enforcement officers to conduct undercover operations designed to help reduce underage drinking at house parties and locate minors who may be in possession of alcohol. The focus is also on education. Information is distributed at checkpoints warning of the consequences of drinking and driving, and encouraging motorists to report drunk drivers by calling 911.
To further reduce the number of accidents, Hesperia installed a red-light camera at one of the city's most dangerous intersections--Main and Cottonwood.
